Intro to Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is an effective sequence of poses that develops strength and flexibility and improves your overall well-being.

In this series, you will gradually learn a gentle approach to the Ashtanga Sequence (Half Primary Series). Keep reading to learn more about what to expect each week.

Each week you can look forward to a similar structure, and similar flow of postures / sequences. This is the beauty of Ashtanga Yoga - a structured sequence and routine you will become familiar with.

Ashtanga Yoga Series in Auckland

Week 1:

We will learning a little bit about the history and origins of Ashtanga Yoga. We will briefly go through the 'Eight Limbs of Yoga' and how this can be used in your yoga practice, and daily lives.

The asana practice (physical postures) will start with Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutation A and B) and we will learn the standard closing sequence.

We will finish our practice with a rejuvenating rest – Savasana.

Week 2:

We are studying Ujjayi breath and how we can implement this Pranayama (breathing technique) during our asana practice.

With the physical movements, we'll start again with with Surya Namaskara, then start adding a few standing positions and finishing with our standard closing sequence and Savasana.

Week 3:

Flowing on from our previous week, we will continue to build on the standing sequences.

As we continue to move through similar shapes and breath practices, this can be a wonderful time to ask questions and be curious about the movements you're making - we welcome questions anytime during class!

Week 4:

Once again, following a similar structure to previous weeks, we will continue to learn more postures as we discover some of the seated positions. As usual, we will be finishing with our standard closing sequence and Savasana.

Week 5:

You will now be quite familiar with the style of class you're walking into, and can continue your journey of the Half Primary Ashtanga sequence.

Your Ujjayi breath will guide us through the physical movements; Surya Namaskara A and B, Standing Positions, Seated Positions, our Standard closing sequence and Savasana.

I hope you find the beauty of this practice as nourishing as I do. With repetition this practice acts like a moving mediation where we are calming the mind, where you will find your pace. And maybe you want to bring this practice into your home practice.

Modifications are always offered to allow a well-balanced individual practice; you are welcome to ask for modifications at any time too.

This will be a fun, non-judgemental space where we can grow and learn from each other - open communication is more than welcome during the class.

We look forward to sharing space with you soon.

Thanks for practicing with us.

Kindly,
