Saunas are generally safe for most healthy adults, but intense heat and sweating carry risks. You should avoid saunas or seek medical clearance first if you have active infections, uncontrolled cardiovascular disease, or unhealed wounds.
Absolute Contraindications (Do Not Use):
Unstable Cardiovascular Issues: Uncontrolled high blood pressure, recent heart attacks (within 3 months), severe aortic stenosis, or severe heart failure.
Active Illness or Fever: Sweating out a cold or fever is dangerous; heat stress compounds these issues.
Pregnancy: Avoid saunas during the first trimester - due to the risk of dangerous fetal body temperature elevations.
Alcohol Intoxication: Using a sauna while drinking or trying to “sweat out” a hangover dramatically increases the risk of dangerous blood pressure drops, fainting, and heart arrhythmias.
Conditions Impairing Sweat: Conditions like Multiple Sclerosis (MS), central nervous system tumors, or severe diabetic neuropathy that limit your natural ability to sweat.
Bleeding Disorders: Hemophilia or a high predisposition to bleeding.
Heat Insensitivity: People with nerve damage or conditions that prevent them from feeling or properly responding to extreme heat.
